For Year 3 children

My Dear Parents

Thank you for considering enrolment in the Sacramental Programme at the Parish of St Peter and St Thomas More.

As parents and the parish, we are responsible for forming your children in the faith and teaching them what it means to follow Jesus in the world today. The Programme, which follows the guidelines offered by Salford Diocese, is designed to offer you all the assistance we can as a Parish.

When you chose to have your child Baptised in the Catholic Faith you began the path that would lead them to the day when they could stand before the Altar and receive the Lord in Holy Communion each Sunday. Through your words and example over the past seven or eight years your children will:

  • Have some understanding that celebrating Mass is an important part of being a Catholic and belonging to the
  • Have some understanding that at Mass we listen to stories about Jesus, pray and sing together and welcome Jesus who comes to us in Holy
  • Have some experience of prayer at home with the family, for ex- ample, grace before meals, night prayers or praying with family members who are ill,
  • Know prayers like the Sign of the Cross, the Our Father and Hail Mary,
  • Know simple acts of devotion such as blessing themselves with Holy Water on entering Church and genuflecting before the Blessed

Building on this knowledge our schools and catechists will help to deepen and guide the children’s understanding and faith, in co-operation with you, the parents. Nothing can replace the importance of what you teach your children about the faith by word and example. The evidence of your work and devotion can be seen in the faith and spirituality of even some of the youngest children, especially at Mass.

If, after attending the Introductory Meeting and receiving the information, you feel it would be right then please join the 2023 Programme, bearing in mind that parents and children are expected to take part in all the sessions.

Thankyou and God Bless,

Fr Peter

Parish Priest/VG

In school, we are very lucky to have Mrs Millward who is a catechist. She works with Year 3 in school to deliver additional preparation lessons. In school we use the book- "Heart speaks to heart". This ensures that parents, school and church work closely together.

The Sacramental Programme 2023/2024 involves:

  • Parents with baptised children in Year 3 or older and would like them to become full members of the Catholic church
  • Your willingness to help your children to grow in faith through your prayers and your example
  • Joining the Parish Community each week at one of the Sunday Masses,
  • Attending the meetings and celebrations, which form the core of the catechetical preparation, with your child
  • The prayers of all who gather each week to celebrate Mass in the parish for you and your children.

If your child attends St Peter’s or St Thomas More School and is in Year 3, their Religious Education classes are designed to compliment your role as the first teachers of your children in the ways of faith. Building on what you have taught your children by word and example and mirroring the Parish Programme the children will

  • Learn about forgiveness and sorrow in the life of
  • Explore forgiveness in their own lives,
  • Learn about the ways in which the Sacrament of Confession is
  • Explore how Baptism has made them members of the
  • Recall the Iast Supper and understand Mass as the weekly gathering of the
  • Learn about the symbolism of bread and wine and about how in Mass bread and wine become the Body and Blood of
  • Realise that participation at weekly Mass is the way we celebrate our Baptism.
  • Learn that we have a responsibility to spread the Gospel by word and

Parent’s and children’s meetings must be attended, as they are important moments of preparation, Also, please bring your children to a weekend Mass—the Saturday Vigil or a Sunday morning Mass. By journeying together as a Parish Family we will support each other and help to nurture the children’s faith,
