AUTUMN TERM

The Toothpaste Challenge

Today we were set a challenge to empty a tube of toothpaste, in teams, having 5 seconds each. We thought - this is a bit easy!

Next, we were given 5 seconds each again to put it all back in the tube using a toothpick. This was the difficult part.

The moral of the task was that it’s easy to blurt words out but it’s not so easy to take them back.

We discussed times when this might happen and how we can have strategies to avoid doing this.

Mood boards

To start our Year 6 journey off to a good start we worked as a team to design a mood board that would have all the words on that we aspire to be during year six. We have proudly displayed these in our classroom so that we can always be reminded of our aims for success.

Gardening

Today we were tasked with moving 1 tonne of soil into our school planter boxes. We made a plan and got to work shovelling into bags and lifting them into place with a partner.
We worked extremely well with our partners and as a whole class team and finished the job in just 40 minutes!

Mrs Moreton paid us a wage in biscuits. Yum!

Living things and their characteristics

As part of our science unit of work on living things, today we had to make miniature models of  invertebrates and add their characteristics using clay and a tooth pick.

Visit to Alkrington Library

Today we had a great time at visiting Alkrington library to work with Sammy Weaver, Rochdale's Poet Laureate.

Sammy told all about her life and how she lives on a barge. She explained how sometimes day to day life and experiences can give her inspiration for her poems and then performed some of her poems for us.
Next, she  taught us skills so that we can all be poets which then inspired us all to write and perform our own poems.

The Gunpowder Plot

To mark bonfire night, today we learnt all about The Gunpowder Plot and how Guy Fawkes was recruited to guard the barrels of gunpowder in the cellar below the Houses of Parliament.
We learnt how and why we celebrate the plot failing and made some firework pictures.

History

Today we tried on a gas mask to experience what it would have felt (and smelt) like.  We struggled to imagine having to carry one of these around with us and the fear of having to wear it.

Remembrance Day

Today we marked Remembrance Day by visiting the Cenotaph.  We remembered all those who gave their lives for us and prayed for peace and love in the world.
After our assembly we looked at the names displayed in the Cenotaph to see if we could find any of our ancestors.

Geography fieldwork

In preparation for our D & T work on playgrounds we visited a local park to look at the design and structure of each piece of equipment.
Before leaving, after gathering our information, we had a little play in the equipment.

Christmas party and Christmas dinner

SPRING TERM

Fun in the snow

We had the best afternoon in the snow, sledging on the hill - a day we will always remember!

WORLD BOOK DAY

St Joseph’s Penny Games

This week Year 6 led an amazing series of games for Key Stage 2 children to come and play during break time. The effort put in was outstanding and an astonishing amount of £450 was raised! Well done Year 6, you should be very proud of yourselves.

Safer Internet Day

Today Rochdale Football Club delivered a great workshop all about scams and how to stay safe online. We participated in a range of activities to raise awareness about scams and how to identify them.

Well-being day

Today’s well-being day was all about countries - our class were Jamaica. Dance days came in to teach us a dance and we loved it. We also voted for Jerk Chicken to be on the lunch menu today - it was delicious.
