Competitive Sport

At St Peter’s RC Primary School we inspire and nurture all children to lead a healthy and active lifestyle.

We ensure that all pupils receive at least two hours per week of quality PE as part of the curriculum. Our children are offered a range of sports and sporting activities through PE lessons and also through a broad extra-curricular offer.

We also recognise that competitive sport at primary school is seen as the first step to sport at the highest level and therefore, we provide opportunities for children to excel and to compete at the highest standard possible. In doing so, we strive to develop those children with gifts and talents in sport.

 After school sports clubs

We provide our children with the opportunity to take part in many after school sports clubs. We welcome all children to join these clubs. Some of our children require additional support to access our clubs and activities and we endeavour to work with parents/carers to enable all children to be able to take part.

Cross Country events

Cross country events will be open for all children to attend. These are designed to encourage children to challenge themselves and be resilient. These events will give all children the opportunity to compete and represent our school during their time with us.

Competition events

As with other curriculum areas, pupils’ attainment and progress is carefully monitored to ensure that all pupils are developing appropriately. The school perceives inter-school competitive sports as a means of extending pupils that demonstrate the requisite skills and qualities, or who are deemed gifted, in this curriculum area. If the event is a competition we will be selecting our strongest competitors.

This criterion for selection varies from fixture to fixture and is hugely dependent on the level of competition, as well as the number of children that we are allowed to take to events. Many of the competitions that we enter are of a high standard, with opposition being extremely competent in terms of skill level, knowledge of rules, tactical knowledge, strength and speed. In all circumstances, teams are selected by the Sports lead using their professionalism and experience to pick the right team to represent the school for that particular occasion. Factors taken into consideration when selecting a team include ability, age, form, fitness, attitude, approach, discipline, organisation and whether or not the match/ competition is of a competitive/ ‘friendly’ nature. Occasionally a child/children will be allowed to play for a team in an older year group where competition rules allow although priority will be given to children within the stated year group.

We recognise that it can be disheartening for a child not to be selected for a particular team. Not all children can be selected, but it is important that those who are do not boast, show off or criticise those who aren’t. This can be hurtful and undermining. The school does not condone this attitude in any way and

may view this type of behaviour as a sign that a child may not be ready to represent the school in competitive sporting competition.

In line with providing opportunities for enabling as many children to take part as possible, we will, when possible enter more than one team. We will also signpost children to clubs available in the local area where we feel their talents can be developed further.

N.B. Team selection changes by event. The Sport’s lead will make the team selection for individual events (or groups of events). This means there are no set teams - the ‘Year 5 football team’ doesn’t exist but there will be Year 5s invited to be part of various teams during the year.

 Substitutes

If a pupil is selected as a substitute for a team, they will be guaranteed to play at some point during the game. In exceptional circumstances, e.g. a cup final match, or important league match, coaches may decide not to use substitutes.

This decision will be at the discretion of the Sport’s lead; however, it is certainly the exception not the rule.

We will endeavour to select the minimum number of substitutes required for competitive matches, so as to avoid disappointment to pupils. However, in ‘friendly’ competitions we may select a larger than usual number of substitutes in order to allow maximum participation.

We will endeavor, for event letters for any sport to be sent out a minimum of 3 days before the game. We require consent from parents/carers for your child to attend the event. If your child is on our first reserve list we may contact by phone at shorter notice to gain permission.

We will also indicate that your child will need to have travel arrangements in place both to and from the event. We understand that lots of the events are within the working day and many parents are working and may not be able to support. If this is the case then you may need to arrange a lift share in order for your child to attend.

Schools staff are not permitted to transport children due to insurance and safeguarding reasons.

We do require a response if your child can or cannot attend so that we can invite another child to take their place at the event. If we have not heard back from parents or carers then we will have to invite another child to take part.

Self-esteem, mindset and attitude

By taking part in competitive support, children will experience winning and losing. They will  be with other children with a range of abilities and talents

With support from school staff and parents/carers, all children can have a happy, positive experience where they can develop their skills. We encourage our children to develop a growth mindset and keep a positive attitude in all circumstances.

With parents/carers support, we expect children:

  • To be respectful and follow directions and instructions from school
  • To be gracious winners and sporting losers.
  • Have a positive attitude and be willing to play for any position or team (A, B etc) as directed by the member of staff.
  • If selected for a team, show kindness to others, be a positive role model and not boast about
  • To speak to member of staff if there are any problems during a match

 Role of Parents

We think our policy is equitable and would like to thank parents in advance for supporting us as follows:-

  • If your child is regularly chosen for a team, please help them to understand it is a privilege to represent the school and they should be proud of themselves.
  • If your child is not chosen, encourage them to keep coming to after school clubs and enjoy what they do; they are still part of the success of their team mates, it is good to develop social skills and is also a good way of keeping fit and healthy.

Parents and spectators have a great influence on the children’s enjoyment and success in sport. Children play sports first and foremost because they love playing. St Peter’s Primary School is dedicated to nurturing that enjoyment and enthusiasm for sport and as a foundation for developing skills and tactics for life.

We believe that taking part in a club contributes to each child’s personal development and self-esteem. This is more important than winning matches. All our teams play to “win” but not at any cost. It is important to play in the right spirit and in a supportive atmosphere.

In order to achieve this result, we rely heavily on the parents and supporters who attend matches to behave in an appropriate manner, to respect team selection and support all the children in the right way. Please note with competitive sport it is impossible to please all children and parents all the time. There are limits to the number of matches/ competitions that it is possible to arrange and to participate in. There are limited number of positions in teams.

So many of our pupils have competed in local inter-school competitions this year, we are extremely proud of our pupils for their dedication to all aspects of school sport, including those young volunteers, leaders and officials who made our competitions possible.

As part of our application, we were asked to fulfil criteria in the areas of participation, competition, workforce and clubs, and we are pleased that the hard work of everyone at our school has been rewarded this year.
