How Important is this subject ?

The way we relate to each other, the way we communicate with each other, and the way we treat each other as human beings and as members of Godʼs global family, lie at the very heart of our faith and form the very fabric of our society. RHE has the capacity to mould the childʼs understanding of life, to replace tension with tolerance, to replace friction with friendship, to replace ridicule with respect, and to bring true cohesion at home, at school, and within the community.

Here at St Peter's we recognise the value that a high-quality RHE curriculum can offer to our pupils. We embrace the challenges of creating a happy and successful future adult life for all our pupils, by giving them knowledge that will enable them to make informed decisions about their wellbeing, health and relationships. We deliver this teaching through the prism of Catholic RHE. We follow the ‘Life to the Full’ programme, produced by Ten:Ten. The framework of ‘Life to the Full’ is taken from the Model Catholic RHE Programme by the Catholic Education Service.

Our children have a good understanding of RHE appropriate to their age group. This is a result of having access to a fully embedded, holistic and comprehensive RHE programme that is taught and built upon on a year-by-year basis.

Our Programme

Our programme will be primarily built around the diocesan approved resource “Life to the full”.

‘Life to the Full’ is a fully resourced Scheme of Work in Relationships Education for Catholic primary schools which embraces and fulfils the new statutory curriculum. Taught with a spiral approach to learning, in which pupils will revisit the same topics at an age appropriate stage through their school life, the programme includes teaching about personal health, physical and emotional wellbeing, strong emotions, private parts of the body, personal relationships, family structures, trusted adults, growing bodies, puberty, periods, life cycles, the dangers of social media, where babies come from, an understanding of the Common Good and living in the wider world. The entire teaching is underpinned with a religious understanding that our deepest identity is as a child of God – created, chosen and loved by God. The programme is fully inclusive of all pupils and their families. Our ‘Life to the Full’ programme will cover:

Module 1: Created and Loved by God

  • Religious Understanding
  • Me, my body, my health
  • Emotional well-being
  • Life cycles

Module 2: Created to Love Others

  • Religious Understanding
  • Personal Relationships
  • Keeping Safe

Module 3: Created to Live in Community

  • Religious Understanding
  • Living in the Wider World

Parent Consultation Letter  ( 3rd December 2020) and  (6th February 2023)– St Peter’s RC Primary School

In the Summer term of 2021, Relationships Education and Health Education  became statutory in all primary schools in England.  This new subject  built on the non-statutory lessons we have previously taught in RSE (Relationship and Sex education)

As a Catholic school, our mission is to support the spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of all of our pupils, rooted in the wisdom and teaching of the Church. The education of children in human sexuality is an important, precious and privileged responsibility.  The Church teaches us that this is very much a partnership with parents, in which parents are the ‘first educators’ of their children on these matters; ultimately, you confer on us the right to co-educate your children with you.

We researched various programmes that were available and  decided to adopt Life to the Full by Ten Ten Resources. Ten Ten is an award-winning Catholic educational organisation that is well-respected and very experienced in this field of work.

Life to the Full has been approved by our bishop.  Furthermore, Ten Ten have entered into a partnership with the Catholic Education Service and the Department for Education to provide training for teachers in Catholic schools on the subject of the new statutory curriculum. Therefore, we were confident that this programme was a very good fit for our school.

Through their programme, Ten Ten understand the foundational role that parents have in educating and nurturing their children on these matters. Within the programme, they have built in resources which will not only keep you informed about what is being taught in school, but will also give you the opportunity to engage your children in discussion, activity and prayer.

We would like to have your feedback on our approach, and particularly on the key decisions that we need to take regarding the teaching of certain topics.  To this end, we have re-opened a consultation period during which we welcome your feedback.

Ten Ten have provided an online Parent Consultation Tool. This is a simple-to-follow, short online course which:

  • Outlines the statutory changes that will take place.
  • Articulates a vision for Catholic Relationships and Health Education.
  • Explains how Life to the Full aims to help us fulfil the statutory curriculum with a Catholic ethos.
  • Provides some information about key decisions we need to make, in consultation with parents.
  • Answers some Frequently Asked Questions.

Ten Ten have also provided an Online Parent Portal which will be a tool we can use throughout the year to keep you informed and updated about the work we are doing in school.

To take part in the consultation, please do the following:

  • Access the Parent Consultation Tool here:

www.tentenresources.co.uk/parent-consultation-primary

  • You will need the following login credentials for our school:

Username: st-peter-m24

Password: peter-24

  • Undertake the Parent Consultation course provided.

We hope that our approach not only assures you about the  subject we are teaching; we hope that this will be an important and exciting opportunity for our entire school community.

Many Thanks

Mrs Clinch
