Please keep coming back to visit so that you can see all of the fun and exciting things we get up to in class!
SUMMER TERM
Holy Communion
Congratulations to our Y3 children who made their First Holy Communion. May God bless you always.
Making Our Own Ice-Cream (With No Freezer!)
We conducted a science experiment that focused on developing the scientific skill 'observation'. We worked in pairs and were given flavoured milk, a small clear zip lock plastic bag, a larger zip lock bag, ice and salt. We poured the flavoured milk into the small bag then placed the bag of milk into another larger bag, added a half a cup of salt and plenty of ice. We then had to vigorously shake the bag for 6 minutes. We then emptied the bags and shared the contents between them in two bowls. We found that the milk had turned into tasty ice cream!
When salt is added to the ice into the bag it forces the ice to melt. However, for the ice to melt it needs to borrow heat from the environment around it – which was our ingredients. As the ice absorbed the heat from the milkshake, the milkshake got colder, until it froze and ended up as ice cream. We call this an endothermic reaction.
We observed what the milk looked and felt like before, during and after the process.

Roman School Trip to Chester
We had an amazing experience at the Grosvenor Museum in Chester! We took part in a workshop where we got to explore a range of Roman artefacts. One of us even got to try on real Roman armour! We explored the museum and learnt lots of new facts. The highlight of our day was our Roman soldier formation training where we had to march through Chester city centre. with our shields, to the ampitheatre. The ampitheatre was built by the Romans over 2000 years so we felt so lucky to experience being there. When we arrived we had to practice different Roman formations.
Feel Good Friday
We had a wonderful day taking part in Feel Good Friday. All the activities we took part in were designed to help our mental well being. We enjoyed yoga with Peaceful Poppy, jigsaws, circus skills and art activities.
The Crowning of Mary
As May is dedicated to Mary and the rosary, Year 3 had the very important job of crowning Mary. They did this infront of the whole school and parents. They sang beautifully and the celebration was very special.
Bikeability - Learn to Ride
Some of our children took part in the level 1 course of Bikeability. We are so proud of all of the children as they showed nothing but determination and resilience. Some of the children could not ride a bike when started but by the of the end of the day they were cycling around with no support!
SPRING TERM
Attracting and Repelling
Today we learnt about magnetic poles. Magnets produce a magnetic force. The area around the magnet where the force can be detected is called a magnetic field. The magnetic field is strongest at the ends of a bar magnet - the north pole and south pole.
In a bar magnet the red represents the north pole and the blue the south pole. If like poles, for example north and north, are brought together, they push away from each other – they repel. If opposite poles are brought together, they pull together – they attract. The closer the magnets are together, the stronger the force between them
We had lots of fun using the bar magnets to move cars around a road using attracting or repelling forces!
World Book Day
We had an amazing day celebrating World Book Day. We dressed up as our favourite book characters, took part in a book quiz, read our favourite stories, swapped books and decorated bunting for Middleton library’s 135th birthday. Thank you to our lovely parents who have supported their children with their love for reading and thank you to Mrs Moore for making a special video to show case our costumes!
Forces - Push and Pull
This half term’s science unit is Forces and Magnets. Today we learnt that pushes and pulls are forces and we use them all day every day! We tested out different activities and identified whether we were using a push or pull force.
Lent
We have created some beautiful Lenten art work for our prayer area.
Prehistoric Art
We have been learning how prehistoric people created art work. We learnt that they only had access to natural resources. We experimented with different natural resources in our sketchbook. We also made our own paint using flour, water and spices!
Tree Planting
Our new Religion unit is 'Listening and Sharing'. We will be thinking about what happens at Mass and why.
We used drama and role-play to demonstrate what happens at church when people gather together for Mass and what happens during the introductory rite.
AUTUMN TERM
Design and Technology - Seasonal Tarts
Over this half term, we have been learning about seasonal fruit and vegetables that are grown in the UK. We have discussed the benefits of eating food grown locally.
We have designed and made savoury tarts using seasonal vegetables grown in the UK.
During this unit we have learnt how to chop and peel vegetables. We have also tasted a range of different vegetables to help us design a tart.
Christmas Dinner
We had a wonderful time eating our Christmas dinner. We all tried hard to eat everything on our plates, including the sprouts!
Middleton Heritage Walk
We had a brilliant time on the Middleton Heritage Trail. We visited several significant buildings and even had a special tour of St Leonard’s Church.
Music
We have been learning how to read and play music. Please click here to here to hear us play Jingle Bells on the glock and spiel.
Geography Fieldwork
We carried out an Environmental Quality Survey around different streets in Middleton. We were ranking different criteria such as noise, litter and appearance. Our hypothesis was that the environmental quality would improve as we moved further away from the town centre. We were very sensible and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.
Maths - Place Value
We have been identifying the value of digits in the 3 digit numbers. We love using practical equipment to do this. We will be applying this to addition and subtraction.
Botanical Drawings
We have been developing our drawing skills. We have been drawing flowers and focusing on improving our shading and toning techniques. We have been inspired by the artist Georgia O'Keefe who was famous for her abstract drawings of flowers. We are currently creating our final pieces, please come back to see them here.
Class Liturgy
Our Religion Champion lead her first class liturgy. The liturgy helped us reflect on our most recent Religion unit ‘Homes’. We thought about our own homes and families. We listened to scripture to help us remember how God’s wishes for the family home and how The Holy Family set an example.
Science - Light
This half term we are learning about light in Science. We wanted to find out if we could see without light. We carried out an investigation to test this enquiry. Miss B0wers placed secret items inside shoe boxes. Each box had a peep hole and we had to look through the peep hole and see if we could see the object without any light. We had a piece of black opaque card that blocked any light from travelling through the box. We then removed the black card which allowed some light to travel into the box. We found this made it slightly easier to see inside the box but it was still hard to see objects that were dark in colour. We concluded that we do need light in order to see!
